Well this finally happened.

Ever since I saw an exhibition of Alec Soth’s work at the Cranbrook Art Museum, I knew I wanted to get into large format photography at some point.  As I made the switch from 35mm to medium format, I kept this in the back of my mind.  And it finally happened.

I picked up this beautiful Toyo 45CX (4x5 obviously) from a guy in Canada for a really good price (he has a great blog that you can check out here).  Everything happened really quickly, one minute I was surfing the classified section on APUG.org and the next minute I’m Paypal’ing the guy money.

The camera showed up last night and I set it up without too much trouble.  It’s a pretty basic setup that consists of a rail, back standard, front standard, bellows, ground glass, lens board, and lens.   Everything went together really smoothly.

Without getting too much into the technical stuff, this is a monorail style camera.  There are two other styles of large format cameras (press and field).  The monorail system is generally the largest and heaviest, but at the same time offers the most flexibility.

The real gem here is the Fujinon 135mm f/5.6 lens.  Some of you guys might be wondering why this is such a “slow” lens but you have to remember this is a 4” x 5” negative we’re talking about here so even at f/5.6 the depth of field will be super shallow.

The other nice thing is the Copal shutter on this thing.  As far as I know (feel free to correct me) these lenses had Seiko or Copal shutters.  The Seiko shutters were discontinued and spare parts are impossible to find so I think I lucked out by landing a Copal unit.

Anyways, I just thought I would throw these photos on here.  I’m looking forward to getting some film through this thing!

Speaking of film, I have no idea on what to order haha.
